The story of Bhattadev University begins back in 1955, when Bajali College was established in the then Barpeta district. It wasn’t just another educational initiative—it was a passionate movement led by local visionaries like Kameswar Das, a gold medalist in Mathematics from the University of Calcutta and the first Assamese to chair the Assam Public Service Commission.
This college was built by the people, quite literally. Local farmers and villagers contributed what little they could from their own pockets, determined to bring higher education to Bajali. The college soon earned respect for its focus on science education, commitment to rural students—especially women—and its growing reputation for excellence.
By 2016, Bajali College had achieved an “A” grade accreditation from NAAC, a testament to decades of hard work and academic integrity.
Becoming Bhattadev University: A New Chapter
The transformation from Bajali College to Bhattadev University was made official through the Bhattadev University Act, 2017. The journey truly began on June 24, 2019, with the appointment of Prof. Birinchi Kr. Das as the first Vice Chancellor.
The university is named after Baikunthanath Bhagavat Bhattacharya, more fondly known as Bhattadev—a revered figure in Assamese literature and considered the father of Assamese prose. His scholarship in Sanskrit and deep understanding of spiritual texts like the Shrimadbhagavata Purana earned him a legendary status.
What’s on Offer: Courses, Research, and More
Inheriting a solid academic foundation from Bajali College, Bhattadev University hit the ground running. It launched new postgraduate programmes, starting with Physics, and quickly expanded its offerings.
Today, Bhattadev University provides:
- UG courses in 19 subjects
- PG courses in 13 subjects
- Ph.D. programmes in 17 fields
- Integrated Master’s programmes in Chemistry, Sanskrit, and Commerce
The university has a strong academic reputation in Zoology, Geography, Mathematics, and Assamese, with its Department of Geography being the second-oldest in the state—just after Gauhati University.
Building for the Future: Campuses and Classrooms
Though the university continues to operate from its original Pathsala campus, it’s expanding rapidly. A new 120-bigha campus at Medhikuchi, about 10 km away, is under construction, supported by substantial funding from the Assam government.
With a growing student body—up by 30% in a single year to nearly 1,000 students—the university is actively hiring faculty and staff and upgrading its infrastructure to meet rising demand.

A Culture of Research and Innovation
Bhattadev University doesn’t just teach—it encourages discovery. Since 2021, it has introduced Ph.D. programmes and already produced doctoral researchers, especially in subjects like Assamese. The institution blends teaching with research, embracing the belief that great teaching stems from constant learning.
The transition from Prof. Das to the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dhanapati Deka (appointed in August 2024), has kept the momentum strong. Under their leadership, the university has celebrated key milestones, including its first convocation and the admission of new Ph.D. batches.
A University with a Soul
Bhattadev University isn’t just about degrees and classrooms. It reflects the spirit of what Jawaharlal Nehru envisioned for Indian universities: centers of humanism, tolerance, and intellectual freedom. It aims to shape not just educated minds, but compassionate and socially responsible citizens.
Affordable and Accessible
The university remains firmly committed to inclusivity. Despite offering a growing range of advanced degrees, its fees are kept affordable. For instance, a full B.Sc. course costs around ₹18,790, making it a viable choice for students from all economic backgrounds.
Looking Ahead
From its grassroots origins as a people’s college to becoming a full-fledged university, Bhattadev University is a story of vision, resilience, and progress. As it continues to grow—adding infrastructure, expanding its academic reach, and deepening its research efforts—it stands tall as one of Assam’s most promising educational institutions.
In many ways, it’s not just a university—it’s a beacon of hope and a proud emblem of what can be achieved when a community believes in the power of education.
