Singapore’s WIS Scheme 2025: Attention Readers!!!! Changes have been made regarding the Workfare Income Supplement program for the low wages workers or for platform workers including food delivery riders and taxi drivers, starting in 2025. Previously they were benefited by this benefit by receiving the bonus once in a year. But from 2025 onwards, they will be benefited monthly. This program will now pay them in smaller monthly payments rather than a single lump sum at the year’s end by which the workers will be able to manage their daily expenses more effectively.

This change came in to effect after platform companies began making monthly contributions to the CPF or Central Provident Fund for their employees. So the workers got registered and when they get credited with their salary, CPF contributions will be deducted immediately and WIS payments will made shortly. WIS was designed back in 2007 to increase the salaries of lower-income workers by helping them to save for retirement. The primary goal of WIS is to focus on Singaporean workers who belongs to lowest 20% of earners, along with to provide support for those who are slightly above them. The amount of more than $10.5 billion has been given to 1,035,000 low-income workers as WIS.

WIS helps the workers of gig economy as in Singapore, many workers lack the same protections and benefits as full-time employees. The WIS scheme aims to offer financial support to these workers by helping them save for medical costs, insurance, and their future. This initiative not only helps them but also represents a significant move towards granting them social security similar to that of formal employees.

Singapore’s WIS Scheme 2025: Eligibility

To get the benefit of WIS, the platform workers have to meet certain criteria. This change means that platform operators will take out CPF contributions from workers’ earnings each month and send them to the CPF Board. As predicted, the platform workers who either have to or choose to increase their CPF contributions will receive higher WIS payments, almost matched to that amount of a regular employee by the year of 2029. To get the benefit of WIS, the workers have to be citizen of Singapore with at least aged 30 years by December 31 of the work year and if the receiver is a person with disabilities then he/she can be of any age. The workers need to earn a monthly income of at least $500 and not more than $3000 starting from Work Year 2025.

Their average monthly income over the past 12 months should not exceed $3,000. In both of the cases net income will be taken into consideration. The workers have to live in a property which value is $21000 at least or less than this valued annually from Work Year 2025 as of and they can only own one property not more than that. If any married person wants to get the benefit then the condition will be applied that the beneficiary and their spouse together can own only one property and their spouse’s assessable income must not be more than $70,000 from the previous Year of Assessment.

When & How the Workers Can Get Their WIS Payments?

The workers will get the payment in two ways. They will get 10% of their WIS payment as in cash and 90% in their MediSave account. The cash portion will be credited to their linked PayNow NRIC-linked bank account only if they are having one and If not then it will go to the bank account they have registered for receiving the government benefits or through GovCash if they haven’t registered a bank account with the govt. If anyone need to change their bank account details, then they can do that after logging into the e-Services.

The govt. will automatically check if the workers are qualified for WIS based on the monthly income reported by their platform operators. If their platform operator isn’t contributing the CPF for the workers then the workers have to inform them to talk about any issues. If there is no response from them then the workers can file complaint with the CPF Board.
